Quotables
When we no longer look at an organic being as a savage looks at a ship, as something wholly beyond his comprehension; when we regard every production of nature as one which has had a long history; when we contemplate every complex structure and instinct as the summing up of many contrivances, each useful to the possessor, in the same way as any great mechanical invention is the summing up of the labour, the experience, the reason, and even the blunders of numerous workmen; when we thus view each organic being, how far more interesting - I speak from experience - does the study of natural history become!

Late Breaking Science Pub News!

The September Science Pub will feature Dr. Tim Allen, from the UW Botany Department, and he'll be speaking about livability versus sustainability. What humans do to survive in both the short term and long term, and the effects the former has on the latter. He'll discuss how our values on livability have changed over time and how this relates to the survival of the First World in a climate of ever tightening resources.

Our Next Science Pub will be September 26th, 2PM at Brocach Irish Pub, located at 7 W. Main Street in downtown Madison on the square.

August 2010 Science Pub

Our August Science Pub featured an ol' SciPub pal, Dr. John Hawks from the UW Madison Department of Anthropology. John was actually our very first SciPub speaker back in July of 2009.

We had one of our biggest turnouts yet, and a whole lot of new faces coming to Science Pub.

Also attending was Patrice Kohl from Madison's WORT-FM radio. Patrice taped the program and excerpts were featured on WORT's bi-weekly science program, Perpetual Notion Machine on September 2nd. Check out the next show September 16, also streamed from their web site, linked above.

Dr Hawks spoke mainly about the recently announce Neanderthal DNA sequencing and what we're now learning from it about one of our most fascinating ancient relatives. Dr. Hawks touched on the difficulties in obtaining DNA from ancient samples, and how true sequences are gleened from impurities.

For more great stuff about all things human evo, check out Dr. Hawks's blog.
